Routes run across the Baltic Sea from Travemünde in Germany, and via Sweden and Estonia to Helsinki, Turku, Naantali and Vaasa. There is no short hop to Finland from the continent, so the real choice is how far north you cross and how much of the journey the ship should take off your hands. Travemünde to Helsinki is a single passage of around thirty hours, two nights at sea and a cabin, ending at Vuosaari in the east of the city. The sailings out of Sweden are shorter and all of them touch the Åland Islands on the way, at Mariehamn by day and at Långnäs on the overnight crossings, which makes the archipelago part of the trip rather than a detour. Furthest north, Wasaline crosses the Kvarken, the narrowest point of the Gulf of Bothnia, from Holmsund near Umeå to Vaasa in about three and a half hours, all year.
