Getting to Stockholm
If you're travelling from Central Europe, there are at least three good ways to reach Stockholm:
Ferry to Denmark + the Øresund Bridge
First, take the ferry from Puttgarden or Rostock to Denmark.
From there, continue across the Øresund Bridge and through Malmö to Stockholm. With an overnight stop in southern Sweden, you'll reach Stockholm around midday, in time for the overnight ferry to Helsinki, which departs in the evening.
Ferry to Sweden
From Kiel, Travemünde or Rostock, you cross overnight to Sweden:
The next day, continue on to Stockholm (5–7 hours' drive) and take the overnight ferry to Helsinki from there.
Ferry from Poland
Take the overnight ferry from Gdańsk to Nynäshamn (a suburb of Stockholm).
From there, continue by ferry to Helsinki. This route is also a realistic option if you're travelling from Poland or the eastern Baltic region. The drive from Berlin to Gdańsk takes around 6 hours.
Without a ferry, via Sweden
This route takes you through Lapland and is ideal if you'd like to see northern Finland as well as Helsinki. The 2,870 km route is split into 3 legs, with a total driving time of around 31 hours:
- Hamburg – Stockholm. From Hamburg, drive first to Stockholm, either without a ferry via Denmark, or with one ferry leg along the way (see previous section).
- Stockholm – Tornio. From Stockholm, continue around 1,000 km along the E4 via Sundsvall and Umeå to Tornio in Lapland, on the Swedish-Finnish border. Without stops, this drive takes around 12 hours.
- Tornio – Helsinki. The remaining roughly 750 km to Helsinki along the E8 and E75 take another 9 hours or so, crossing more than half of Finland along the way.
By ferry via the Baltic states
Especially scenic is the route via the Baltic states, taking you through Poland as well as Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. The route is split into 3 legs:
- Berlin – Warsaw. From Germany, the E30 runs straight across Poland to Warsaw. The E30 stretch is 574 km long and takes just under 6 hours without stops.
- Warsaw – Tallinn. From Warsaw, continue on the E67 through Lithuania and Latvia to Tallinn in Estonia. Along the way you'll pass Riga, one of the most beautiful cities on the Baltic Sea. The roughly 1,000 km takes around 12 hours of driving time.
- Tallinn – Helsinki. From Tallinn, several operators sail to Helsinki almost every hour, with a crossing time of only 2 hours.
