No direct ferry to Finland

No ferry sails from any Danish port to Finland or Åland. So you travel in two stages: first to Sweden, then by ferry across the Baltic. Which route suits you depends on where in Denmark you start and where in Finland you are heading.

From Denmark to Sweden

From Zealand, two routes lead to southern Sweden. From Copenhagen you drive over the Øresund Bridge to Malmö. Further north, the ferry from Helsingør to Helsingborg crosses in 20 minutes, with 50 to 55 sailings a day.

From Jutland, Frederikshavn is the shorter route. Stena Line sails four to five times a day to Göteborg on Sweden's west coast in just under four hours.

On to Finland

In Sweden you drive to one of the ports on the east coast. From there, five ferry routes lead to Finland and Åland:

Via Germany

If you want to avoid driving through Sweden, head south. From Rødby on Lolland, Scandlines takes you to Puttgarden on Fehmarn in 45 minutes, more than 30 times a day. From there you continue to Travemünde, where Finnlines sails daily to Helsinki in about 30 hours. Everything about the direct ferry is on Travemünde - Helsinki and Ferry Germany - Finland.

Which route is right for me?

  • From Copenhagen and Zealand: over the Øresund Bridge or Helsingør - Helsingborg, then on from Stockholm.
  • From Jutland: Frederikshavn - Göteborg and through Sweden to Stockholm or Kapellskär.
  • To central or northern Finland: through Sweden to Umeå and with Wasaline to Vaasa.
  • Without a long drive: Rødby - Puttgarden and the direct ferry from Travemünde.
