The Stockholm - Turku route crosses the world-famous archipelago from Sweden to Finland in around 11 hours. Two operators run the crossing - Viking Line and Tallink Silja Line - together offering up to three departures a day, both by day and overnight. All ferries make a brief stop in the Åland Islands: at Mariehamn on the day sailings, and at Långnäs on Viking Line's overnight crossings.
Modern ships run the route: Viking Line's Viking Glory and Viking Grace, and Tallink Silja Line's Baltic Princess. On board you'll find restaurants, a shop and cabins for the overnight crossing. In Turku, both operators dock right at the harbour, just a few minutes' walk from Turku Satama railway station, with trains to Helsinki and Tampere.

Getting to the terminals in Stockholm
The two operators use different terminals in Stockholm. Viking Line departs from the Stadsgården terminal (Tegelvikshamnen), close to Slussen, while Tallink Silja Line departs from Värtahamnen, north-east of the centre. Both are well served by public transport; connecting buses run to Värtahamnen from the City Terminal. By car, follow the signs towards Södra Länken and then to the relevant terminal. You can leave your vehicle in paid parking right at the terminal for the duration of your trip.
Check-in and departure
Allow plenty of time, and arrive at the terminal earlier if you're travelling with a vehicle than on foot. With Viking Line, the self-service check-in machines open around two hours before departure; check-in and boarding close 20 minutes before sailing, and tall vehicles over 2.4 m need to check in 45 minutes in advance. With Tallink Silja Line, vehicle check-in closes 30 minutes before departure and boarding for foot passengers 20 minutes before; it's recommended to be at the terminal around an hour before sailing. Self-service and online check-in are free, while there's a fee at the staffed counter. Bring a valid ID - a passport or national ID card is enough.
On board
Modern ships run the route: Viking Line's Viking Glory (day sailings) and Viking Grace (overnight), and Tallink Silja Line's Baltic Princess. On board you'll find restaurants and cafes, a duty-free shop, and cabins in several categories. For the overnight crossing it's worth booking a cabin; by day, a seat in the lounges is enough. Payments on board can be made by card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express) or in cash: Viking Line accepts euros and, on its Sweden routes, Swedish kronor too, while on Tallink Silja Line you pay on board in euros. You won't need a Finnish or Swedish card for the crossing.
Vehicles, bikes and pets
Cars, motorhomes, caravans and motorcycles are all carried; the standard vehicle deck has a maximum height of 2.4 m. Arrival in Turku and onward travel
In Turku, both operators dock right at the harbour (Satama); the Viking Line terminal address is Linja 1, 20100 Turku. Turku Satama railway station is only about 150 metres away, with trains to Helsinki and Tampere and buses into the city centre (route 1). Helsinki is around two hours away by train. If you're driving, you'll reach Finland's road network right at the harbour.
Tickets and fares
Booking online is the easiest option. Both operators offer tiered fares, from an affordable saver rate to flexible tickets that can be rebooked or cancelled for a fee; the exact terms depend on the fare chosen. You'll travel most cheaply by booking early and choosing off-peak season or weekdays; return fares save you more still.
