The direct ferry from Travemünde
The only ferry from Germany to Finland is run by Finnlines, once a day all year round, from Skandinavienkai in Lübeck-Travemünde to Vuosaari port in eastern Helsinki. The crossing takes about 30 hours, and you spend two nights on board. With a car, motorhome or dog, this is the easiest way to go: no change of ferry and no drive through Sweden. Check-in, ships and arrival are covered on Travemünde - Helsinki.
From Rostock
No ferry runs from Rostock to Finland. Stena Line and TT-Line sail several times a day to Trelleborg in southern Sweden, and the crossing takes about six hours. Alternatively, cross to Gedser with Scandlines in about two hours and drive through Denmark and over the Øresund Bridge into Sweden. From there you continue to one of the ferries to Finland.
From Kiel
There is no ferry to Finland from Kiel either, but there are two routes north. Stena Line sails daily to Göteborg on Sweden's west coast in just over 15 hours. DFDS sails almost daily to Klaipėda in Lithuania in about 20 hours. From there the road leads through Latvia and Estonia to Tallinn, where the ferry to Helsinki takes about two hours.
From Hamburg
No ferry runs from Hamburg to Finland. The port for the direct ferry to Helsinki is Travemünde, which you reach on the A1 motorway. From Travemünde, TT-Line also sails to Trelleborg and Finnlines to Malmö, both in about nine hours.
Via Denmark
If you would rather drive than spend a long time on the ship, take the ferry from Puttgarden on Fehmarn to Rødby. Scandlines sails more than 30 times a day, and the crossing takes 45 minutes. You then continue via Copenhagen and over the Øresund Bridge into Sweden. All the routes from Denmark are on Ferry Denmark - Finland.
The connecting ferry to Finland
Via Sweden or the Baltic states, the journey ends with a connecting ferry:
- Stockholm - Helsinki: Viking Line and Tallink Silja overnight in about 16 to 18 hours, calling at Åland.
- Stockholm - Turku: up to three times a day in about eleven hours through the archipelago.
- Kapellskär - Naantali: Finnlines twice a day in eight to nine hours; the port is beyond Norrtälje (Ferries from Kapellskär).
- Umeå - Vaasa: Wasaline across the Kvarken in about four hours, good for central and northern Finland.
- Tallinn - Helsinki: several times a day in about two hours, the connecting ferry for the route through the Baltic states.
