From Germany and via Sweden

Two very different routes lead to Finland, and the timetable above shows them side by side. The direct ferry from Travemünde is the only connection without an overland stage: it crosses the Baltic in one go, you spend more than one night on board, and you avoid driving through Scandinavia.

From Stockholm run the classic overnight ferries, to Helsinki and to Turku. They are shorter than the direct crossing but require the journey up to Sweden first. Turku is the quicker of the two and the obvious choice if you are staying in south-western Finland.

The short crossings

Three routes are bridges rather than journeys. Tallinn - Helsinki across the Gulf of Finland is the densest service in the Finnish network. Kapellskär - Naantali is the freight route with passenger service north of Stockholm, and Umeå - Vaasa crosses the Gulf of Bothnia at its narrowest point.

What to watch out for in the timetable

In the main season from June to August extra sailings are added; in winter individual ones are dropped or shifted. The day of the week changes the pattern too. So pick your actual date above rather than carrying over a rhythm from another month.

On the overnight routes from Stockholm and on the direct ferry from Travemünde, the cabin is part of the journey, not an extra. In high season cabins sell out before the crossing itself does, and then a free departure in the timetable is of little use to you.

The times above are planning data. What counts is the departure the booking shows for your date, and your booking confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Timetable

Frequently asked questions about departure times and seasons for ferries to Finland.

How often do ferries to Finland run? +

It depends on the route. The direct Travemünde-Helsinki ferry sails nearly every day, as do the overnight ferries from Stockholm to Helsinki and Turku. Umeå-Vaasa is served several times a week, and Tallinn-Helsinki runs almost hourly. You will find the exact departures for your travel date in the live timetable above.

Do departure times change with the season? +

Yes. In the high season from June to August, extra departures are added, while in winter some sailings are dropped or shifted. Weekday and weather conditions can also affect timing. The departure shown when you book for your specific date is always the one that applies.

Are there overnight ferries to Finland? +

Yes. From Stockholm to Helsinki and Turku you sail overnight in the classic style, and on the direct Travemünde-Helsinki ferry you actually spend two nights on board. On these routes you add a cabin to your booking, and in high season they sell out quickly.
